Hello

Thanks for wanting to learn more about me. My name is Teresa Grosboll and I'm the founder of Read and Play Lab. Outside of my work I am a wife to a truly great guy who is an engineer in the trucking industry. I am also mom to three remarkable adult children, a nurse, a technology professional, and an apprentice electrician. I am endlessly proud of each of them.

A few years ago I fell in love with nature and outdoor education and it changed how I see learning entirely. I now weave nature into my practice whenever I can, because children come alive outside in ways that are hard to replicate indoors.

I love taking hard things and making them simple. Breaking something complex down into a clear, bite-sized path forward,  whether for a child learning to read or a parent trying to understand their child's needs, is genuinely one of my favorite things to do. And unlike most people, I actually love public speaking.

I am a lifelong learner, a lover of good food, and someone who believes deeply that growth is always possible. My faith is the foundation everything else is built on. Jesus is my guide in this work and in my life.

My Story

I didn't start in a classroom. I started at home.

I homeschooled my three children for many years, and somewhere along the way I began teaching other children too, in co-ops, Christian schools, and eventually public school classrooms, while earning my teaching degree. I've always learned best by doing, and teaching was no different.

My two older children learned to read easily. My youngest did not. Nothing I tried seemed to stick. He was frustrated. I was at my wit's end. It turns out he has severe dyslexia and that discovery sent me on a deep dive into the science of reading, neurodivergent learning, and what it actually takes to help a child who needs a different approach. What I found changed everything.

Children are not lazy. They are asking for more support, different pathways, and more time. That truth became the foundation of everything I do.

What I believe about children and learning:  After more than 25 years in education: homeschooling, classroom teaching, reading coaching, and raising children with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, I've come to understand something that no training alone could have taught me:

Children thrive when they are treated with dignity, patience, curiosity, and respect. I've watched children absorb a message they were never meant to carry: if you don't fit the system, something must be wrong with you. I believe that message is harmful and I've dedicated my work to replacing it with something better. When a child walks into my space, I want them to feel safe before they feel challenged. Connection comes first. Trust comes first. When a child feels genuinely seen and understood, real learning becomes possible.

Learning should never cost a child their self-respect. I also believe that play is not the opposite of learning, it is one of the most powerful vehicles for it. Movement, games, hands-on exploration, choice, and genuine joy are not distractions from reading. For many children, especially those who have struggled and shut down, they are the only door that works. I have seen this truth confirmed again and again in my work. And I believe I was called to this: to be the guide for struggling children and exhausted parents that I wish I'd had when my own son was young. I ask for wisdom daily, and I am grateful for every child who walks through my door.

My training and background I bring both formal training and lived experience to every session. No franchise program or standardized curriculum can replicate this combination.
